The 1950s, World War II had ended, the decade of consumerism began and the Illustrator and Graphic Designer hybrid emerged, TheDesigner-Illustrator. These artists had a modern artistic outlook. Their work, unlike the realistic approach of the illustrators that preceded them, was charming whimsical, stylishly simplified and almost always, clever. This thesis will take a closer look at The Designer-Illustrator’s unique ability to straddle both professions in all areas of design. Moving forward, it will examine their influence on illustration and design in the 21st Century and address the rarity of this type of artist in the world today.
